Peterborough Cathedral, located in the heart of the historic city of Peterborough, England, is a testament to the city’s rich history. With a place of worship and prayer on the site for 1350 years, the cathedral’s present building is approaching its 900th anniversary. Marvel at the superb Gothic West Front and the beautiful hand-painted wooden nave ceiling.
This magnificent cathedral also holds historical significance as the resting place of Henry VIII’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon. It was also once the resting place of Mary Queen of Scots before her body was moved to Westminster Abbey. The origins of the cathedral can be traced back to King Peada of the Middle Angles, who founded the first monastery on the site in 655AD. Despite facing destruction by the Vikings in 870 and a devastating fire in 1116, the cathedral was rebuilt in its present form between 1118 and 1238. In 1541, it became the Cathedral of the new Diocese of Peterborough and is now known as the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul, and St Andrew.

The Victorian gardens at Elton Hall have been carefully restored and feature a knot garden, a herbaceous garden with a fountain, fine hedges, and a beautiful Gothic orangery built to celebrate the Millennium. During the summer opening season, which runs from the late May Bank Holiday until the end of August, visitors can explore the hall and gardens on selected afternoons.
