History of Saxtead Green Post Mill
According to the Manorial Records, Saxtead has been home to a windmill since 1287. The current Saxtead Green Mill can be traced back to at least 1796 when it was operated by miller Amos Webber. Over the years, the mill underwent several transformations and raised three times in total. Whitmore and Binyon, the renowned Wickham Market millwrights, played a significant role in refurbishing the mill in 1854, replacing the sails and improving the machinery.
Ownership and Restoration
After several endeavors and repairs, the mill came under the ownership of Steven Charles Sullivan, the son-in-law of A.S. Aldred, in 1951. The mill saw a complete rebuild between 1957 and 1960 supervised by millwright Jesse Wightman. The care of Saxtead Green Post Mill was entrusted to English Heritage in 1984, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Recent restoration work in 2017, undertaken by local millwright Tim Whiting, included the installation of new sails and a replacement fantail.
